Hello, James, Glad you got my emails. And glad you liked the Rota Marines and Lost Buddies websites. We now have quite a few Rota Marines on our mailing list. And the list keep growing by a few Rota Devil Dogs each year. We have placed ads in several Marine and military themed websites announcing our reunions and that we are looking for ALL Rota Marines who ever served at the Marine Barracks in Rota, Spain. The Rota Marines website has been online for over a year. But some of us began our search for our fellow Marines several years ago. When we finally had enough old salts on our list, we decided to have our first reunion in San Diego in 2008. And that reunion was a huge success. Many of the troops brought their wives and they also had a blast. As the old saying goes, "A pictures is worth a thousand words". How true this is. And we have a slew of photos to show the great times the troops had in our reunions. We are now preparing to hold our third reunion in Biloxi, Mississippi. The reunion dates will be announced in this website. I am glad you found some of your old Marine Barracks buddies. When you have a chance, please give them the link to our website. And tell them they are welcome to join us in Biloxi for the Rota Marines 2010 reunion. Looking forward to hearing from you and hopefully some of your Rota buddies. Angel Moreno

Hello, Angel, thanks for writing me. I checked the Rota Marines site and enjoyed seeing the pictures of the reunion and of Rota. I guess every Marine who was stationed in Rota has that in common. What a great duty station. I remember the days in Rota with fond memories. Thanks again for your help with the other web sites. I found a couple of guys in the last year who were with me at the Marine Barracks in Rota the same time I was through Classmates.Com. We email or talk to each other everyday or so. You never forget your Marine Brothers. Semper Fi. Jim Miller.

James, Hope you received the email I sent you earlier this morning. Thanks for your email to the COMMENTS page of the Rota Marines.com website. Your tour of duty at the Marine Barracks in Rota is not too far off from when most of us served. Most of the Rota Marines who attended the first two reunions were there from 1963, to 1966. However, we also had a few Rota Marines who were there prior to and after the above dates. And even though we did not know each other prior to our reunions, they joined us for our first two reunions, and they hope to attend future reunions. You are more than welcome to join us at our 2010 reunion in Biloxi, Mississippi. Perhaps, in time, as you locate your long lost buddies who served with you at the Marine Barracks during your tour of duty there, they also can join us for our yearly festivities. Semper Fi. We had about 30 Rota Marines at both the first and second reunions. If we could get the Marines that attended the first and second reunions we would have about 45. Add another 22 of those we have contacted but could not or did not show interest. Then add the spouses, we would have anywhere from 75 to over 100 at the next reunion. If anyone has an old Rota Marine buddy that has not attended, please contact them and urge them to come see us in Mississippi. Jack Malone

Dennis, thank for your compliment and gracious offer to help me with the cost of operating the RotaMarines.com website.
I volunteered to create and operate the reunion website because I love the Marine Corps and because the Marine Barracks in Rota, Spain was my favorite duty station. Administering the reunion website is a labor of love. Monetary compensation for my service is not required. Whatever time, energy, effort and cost it takes to operate this website is nothing compared to the tremendous satisfaction I feel from doing my part to give our fellow Rota Marines, their spouses and guests, a wonderful and memorable experience. Seeing the smiling faces in the reunion photos is my reward. I look forward to seeing you and the troops at our 3rd reunion in Biloxi in 2010, and at our 4th reunion in San Francisco in 2011. Angel Moreno

Angel, I want to thank you for your wonderful web site. You have done an outstanding job. I know this takes a tremendous amount of time and patience. Do you need donations to help maintain the Rotamarines.com website? If you do then please do not hesitate to call on me. We are looking forward to hosting the 2011 reunion in San Francisco and hope that you can attend. Also hope to see you in Biloxi next year. Semper Fi. Dennis Laine

When we first started to organize the first reunion, we decided to restrict the participants to those who served from 1963, to 1966. The alternative was to open it to Marines who were there in, for instance, from the mid-1980s through the present and, so, wind up having to manage the refusals.
When we began to plan the 2008 San Diego reunion, we received several emails from Marines who were stationed in Rota long after the time frame that we established. Mike Foley responded to each one and told them that they could come, but that he, at 61, would be the youngest Rota Marine from the specified 1963, to 1966, time frame. Not a single inquirer responded. We don't have anything against any Rota Marine who served at the Marine Barracks way beyond the 1963, to 1966, period, but they obviously accepted that our age difference was something to consider.
Even with the established guideline, we still have Marines from outside the parameters who wrote and asked if they could join us. Hal Davis, who was there from 1967 to 1969, expressed a desire to attend the 2009 reunion. Of course, we said yes. And remember also that we willingly accepted anyone who wanted to come with an "official" Rota Marine. There was one, a friend of Chico's, an ex-sailor, Ed Ewaskewich.
In time we hope to hear from more Rota Marines (as Hal Davis) as the word spreads throughout cyber space about our reunions. We are sure that we will eventually receive many more inquiries from Marines who served in Rota from the day the Marine Barracks was first established, to those who recently served there. And they will ALL be welcome if they want to join us. In the meantime, we continue to advertise the Rota Marines reunions in more Marine and military veterans themed websites with the hope of reaching more former Rota Marines, and we are in touch with those who could not go to our San Diego and Washington, DC reunions.
I thank you for your concerns and greatly appreciate your suggestions to include ALL Marines who ever served in Rota. Perhaps in time (after a few reunions under our belts) those of the younger Rota Marines generations will get over the "age" difference and join us ONLY as Rota Marines regardless of when we were in Spain. And that is one goal that all of us would want to accomplish. Angel Moreno

Why are you limiting the reunions only for Marines who were stationed at the Marine Barracks in Rota, Spain during the years 1963-1966. I think you should invite all Marines who were ever stationed there. Thanks. Robert "BUCK" Rogers

Jody and I really enjoyed the reunion. Last year was great! And this year was greater!  You Marines will never have the opportunity to have the feelings that I have of being back with the Marines who set the foundation of my Marine Corps career. I spent a year in school and a year in the 2nd Division before spending three years in Rota. There we all took an MCI course a month; went in the field once a year to practice defending the base from external forces; remembered to keep our heads down as we pulled butts at the rifle range; went somewhere in France for a parade; stood 24 hour duty every other day and had Cinderella liberty on the other day; made it thru the Cuban missile crises and the shooting of JFK; and even had time to play sports for Captain Summerlin and an occasional trip to Rota or Seville for liberty. Many of us went from there directly to Vietnam and I am convinced that we were better Marines for having served in Rota. I am so proud to see how you have grown up and what great choices you have made in your wives. YOU made a difference in my life! All Marines who ever served at the Marine Barracks in Rota, Spain are invited to join us for our reunions. The more Rota Marines and wives, the merrier. Write and ask us to add your names to our Rota Marines Mailing List. We will send you periodic special information regarding our reunions. Angel Moreno.

How come you don't include Marines from 1959 to 1961? Frank Mroz.

I would like to add my thanks and gratitude to Angel Moreno for the great website that kept us posted and informed. I especially like the look of the new and improved website. Nice work Angel. Semper Fi. Jack Malone

I agree. We should hold our reunion every two years. This will give everyone more time to prepare themselves financially. It would be great to hold our reunions in proximity to Marine locations, but how many locations affiliated to the Marines are available to us? Not too many. Also note that our reunions depend on who will volunteer to make the one-year commitment to host and organize our reunions and supervise the festivities. Let us give KUDOS to Jack Malone and Mike Foley for taking the bull by the horns and giving us such a wonderful and memorable experience. And let us give a special thank you from the bottom of our hearts to Judy Scanlon for doing such a great job of getting us the tour bus. In the long run the only thing that matters is our desire to muster once a year or so to share a few cold beers with our fellow Rota Marines and their wonderful wives and guests, and reminisce about the good old times at the Marine Barracks in Rota, Spain. I had a fantastic time at the 2009 Rota Marines Reunion. I would like to thank everyone that had a hand in making the reunion such a success. In particular, I want to thank Judy Scanlon, Mike Foley and Jack Malone. I’m sure there were many others working very hard  behind the scenes and I thank you all from the bottom of my heart. I especially want to thank Chico for keeping the count. Jim Connelly

I had a great time at the Rota Marines 2009 Reunion. Its because we did things that had to do with the Marine Corps. We should do things that are affiliated to the Marines. Also we should start having the reunions every two years to give people time to better  themselves financially. Not everyone is in the same situation. Just my thoughts. Thanks. SF. Lou Onofrio

Hello, Tom and Judy, thanks for caring and inquiring about my health. My operation was a success. I am doing much better. Getting old can sometimes be a bummer what with those maladies  that sometimes sneak up on us without warning. But that is life. All we can do is grin and bear the pain and hope the agony goes away with the medications they give us. On the bright side, as long as I wake up in the morning and can work on my websites and respond to the emails that pile up in my mail boxes this old Devil Dog is doing OK. Sorry to hear that Charlie Hinkle received his orders to report to his Final Duty Station In The Sky. He was a magnificent Marine. My condolences to his loved ones. We shall miss good old Charlie. Hi, Angel, I hope you are home and recuperating. Please let us know how your surgery went. I do not want to bother you but we want to let you know that we are thinking of you. Please let us know how you are doing. Judy said to say hello and hopes you are doing well. The Reunion went very well. A lot of people were asking for you, and of course they also wanted to know what happened to Mike. We told them about your situation and they agreed that you and Mike should have been there. The two guys who kept it together all year with all that work were not there. I mentioned to everyone at the reunion that you were willing to maintain the web site with photos and also offered to help whoever is going to host the 2010 reunion. As of right now Kelley and his wife may be hosting our next reunion in Biloxi, Mississippi. Most of the guys were receptive, so I guess time will tell. As soon as I get some pictures I will forward them to you. I do not know if anyone told you that Charlie Hinkle passed away on 8/25/09. Louie Onofrio called me while we were traveling to Virginia and told us what happened to Charlie. Louie Onofrio, Peter Alvarez, Chico Rivera and Bob Seldomridge went to see Charlie the weekend before he died. In a way they had their own reunion. Tom and Judy Scanlon
